Why We Exist
While literature is often meant to be simply a blueprint for performance, the poetic theatre being returned to us by the performance poets and the like are making the literature of the theatre more interesting... the poets and writers are helping to reinvigorate the fetish we had for llve performance to begin with. – John Blackstock, theatre critic and English instructor

It was because of a passion for poetry and change that BlackPoet Ventures was formed.

We desired to make performance poetry more interesting and fresh, to fulfill the dreams and expectations of talented poets who desire to showcase their gifts with creative and artistic freedom, and to satisfy the demand for professional and quality performances and creative productions. So we set out to bring poetry and literature to the stage in theatrical and thematic contexts in order to take audiences beyond open mic and slam poetry arenas, and to welcome new audiences to experience poetry and spoken word.

Thus, it became necessary to define what we do by coining a new term in poetic theatre. That term is poeticduction® – a presentation of poetic diction on stage through spoken word, music, dance, song and visual art. We want to expose and empower some of the finest poets the world has to offer. We want to provide the poetry you live by, love with, cry because of, laugh at and nod your head – or snap your fingers – in agreement with.

Our motto is "See. Hear. Speak. Embrace The Oral Tradition." This tradition is expressed in a West Afrikan concept of sankofa, which translates to mean "it is not taboo to go back and fetch what you forgot." Throughout our journey in poetry and spoken word, we respect, reflect upon and reconnect with this tradition to keep poetry in motion and to move forward in a positive and productive manner.

What happens time and time again with art is that it either doesn’t receive the recognition it deserves or it is exploited beyond the point of appreciation. But there exists those special voices, those incredible poems, those amazing artists and those undeniably charismatic performers who reach our souls and make us sit up and take notice. It’s the magic of poetry. It has no boundaries. Just infinite possibilities.

Since July 2005, this has been our venture... to expore the possibilities...

Join us in embracing poetry and keeping spoken word in motion!

What We Believe

  • We believe the performing arts are essential. Live performance is a universal form of human communication and a fundamental component of free expression. It has a transformative power. The interaction between artist and audience is basic to civic life, crucial to the economic well-being of communities, indispensable to the mind and spirit.
  • We believe the performing arts unite people. For the performing arts to flourish, we must have diversity and inclusiveness: in our performances, our presentations, and our audiences.  By embracing all human experience – and bridging differences among individuals, communities, and cultures – we strengthen both art and society.
  • We believe the performing arts inspire leadership. Artists play a leading role in civic affairs and global dialogue. We can and should play an active role in the arts world and in its home community to  ensure art and ideas circulate vigorously and freely. Our leadership can advance the arts, the artists and our audiences.
